Russia will assist the Republic of Uganda in establishing The Selection and seed center

The decision to support the project was made at today's meeting in Rossotrudnichestvo. The selection and seed center will be established as part of the" Scientific and educational initiative for Uganda and East Africa " and will be the first center of its kind to be established with the participation of Russia abroad.

"We are starting to discuss issues of international development assistance in the context of humanitarian policy in a very practical way, we are starting to look at specific projects, so that we can then multiply everything to other countries and regions of Africa, and maybe not just Africa," said Yevgeny Primakov, head of Rossotrudnichestvo.

He also stressed the importance of developing a comprehensive approach to developing cooperation with African countries, which uses Russian scientific, technical and innovative developments, as well as Russian educational programs in addition to the needs of key sectors of national economies and projects.

"The Ministry of education and science of Russia aims to develop and improve the efficiency of key sectors of the African economy through scientific research and training of national personnel. The work that we have started is a Scientific and educational initiative for Uganda and East African countries, which was initiated and implemented by the Ministry, " said an employee of the Ministry of science and higher education of the Russian Federation responsible for the project.  He presented to the participants the first results of the practical implementation of the project "Scientific and educational initiative for Uganda and East Africa" and the role of the pilot project-the Selection and seed center in it.

In turn, the Director of the FAO Office for relations with the Russian Federation, Oleg Kobyakov, expressed support for the initiative of the Ministry of education and science of Russia to create a Selection and seed center in the Republic of Uganda and in General for scientific and educational cooperation with African countries.

The meeting participants also discussed the organizational structure of the Center, scientific and economic rationale of the project, directions of professional training of the necessary staff for its creation and functioning, prospects of participation in the project for the Russian business through public-private partnerships in various sectors, as well as the transfer of the directions and forms of cooperation for the countries of Western and southern Africa.

Following the discussion, the participants of the meeting unanimously supported the feasibility and timeliness of implementing scientific and educational programs of cooperation with African States in the field of agro-industrial complex, and confirmed the readiness of interested organizations to start practical work on the creation of a Selection and seed center in the territory of the Republic of Uganda in the second half of 2021.

The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Ministry of foreign Affairs, the Ministry of agriculture, Ministry of Finance of Russia, JSC Gazprombank, Russian state humanitarian University, Russian state agrarian University – MTAA named after K. A. Timiryazev, Moscow state University named after M. Lomonosov, interested relevant organizations.
